Is The Human Digestive System Designed For Meat?

By: Ron Lagerquist

“Antithetical to that of the cat, our digestive tract is long, the same as in those creatures who digest plant foods.”

To answer the question of how beneficial it is to eat large amounts of meat, we must look at the human body. Cats, being true carnivores, secrete ten times more hydrochloric acid than humans do. Their digestive tracts are short and smooth for the rapid expulsion of fibreless flesh. They can easily eliminate copious amounts of cholesterol and possess sharp teeth for ripping flesh, all of which humans do not have. Antithetical to that of the cat, our digestive tract is long, the same as in those creatures who digest plant foods. This is why it is important to also eat high-fiber foods like a raw salad or steamed vegetables when eating meat.

The two types of digestive juices the stomach produces to break down food are alkaloid and acidic. Carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, breads and grains use an alkaloid for digestion, but strong hydrochloric acid is needed to digest meat. To neutralize these digestive acids, the body utilizes its internal resource of calcium. Osteoporosis is the result, not of a lack of milk intake, but of a negative calcium balance caused by the body using its internal store of calcium to neutralize an acid-producing diet. We are going to deal with the milk later.

The Bantu women of Africa live on a sparse diet of vegetable sources, free of dairy foods. Their average intake of calcium is 250 to 400 mg a day. This is far lower than the 800 mg. recommended by the RDA. They give birth to as many as ten babies during their life, each child breast-fed for ten months. Although childbearing causes an intense calcium drain, osteoporosis is unknown to these people. When Bantu women migrate to the city and adopt a protein-rich diet, osteoporosis and other diseases become a threat to their health.

In 1984, the Medical Tribune reported studies by Michigan State and other universities regarding bone densities. It was the most extensive study yet undertaken. They discovered that in the United States, at age 65, male vegetarians averaged a three percent bone loss compared to male meat-eaters, who averaged a seven percent bone loss. The study among women was even more revealing. Female vegetarians averaged an 18 percent bone loss compared to female meat-eaters, who averaged a 35 percent bone loss. The conclusion was that vegetarians had significantly stronger bones. The Inuit people, who live on a very high-protein diet, have the greatest calcium intake of any population and have one of the highest rates of osteoporosis. Clearly the rampant problem with osteoporosis is a byproduct of a nation addicted to meat.

A human’s digestive system is not genetically designed for a high meat diet. This should not surprise a biblical creationist; after all, man’s intended diet was laid out in Genesis 1: 29-30 and frankly, it reads like a proverbial Vegan For Life diet plan. We have cleared the moral question of meat eating in the article: What Does The Bible Say About Eating Meat? God has made all things clean. But the words of Paul apply so well here, “Everything is permissible for me but not everything is beneficial.” (1 Cor. 6:12)

Clearly, a diet high in meat is not a good fit to the human body. Am I advocating that we all become vegan vegetarians? No. But some will make that decision, not from guilt or duty, but simply because they find that when they completely eliminate animal foods, they feel healthier and more energetic. Others will reduce their intake and only eat naturally raised meat and fish, finding perceptible health dividends.

You may be surprised to discover that I do eat animal products in moderation. I have fish a few times a week, but always with a large salad. Every so often I will have organic eggs for breakfast, and when eating out I may have some seafood; on rare occasions I may even have a steak. Animal products are a small part of my diet; my grocery cart is predominantly populated with fresh fruit and vegetables.

The same outdated and misunderstood points seem to be endlessly made for humans not eating meat. Many species of primates act as omnivores and a handful are actually great hunters, as ancient humans have been. Cortex development is largely based on fatty acids found in marine animal flesh, and humans can clearly digest raw meat with no issues when it is fresh raw meat (sushi). Typical humans have no problem digesting the fattiest of fatty meats, yet over time we found it much more biologically profitable to digest sterilized, cooked meat rather than having all of the safe guards against parasites and rotting flesh. The most shocking argument to me is that vegetarian and vegan diets tend to have longer life expectancy. Life expectancy is a very obsolete measure of fitness when the previous twenty or thirty years are spent without the possibility of reproduction. Also red meat specifically contains an extremely high concentration of testosterone precursors, which are very important for muscle development and fertility in young men.

I am sorry but referencing? You might have some idiots that already agree with you agreeing but you have hardly put together a suitable argument by referencing one tribe whom had access to a wide variety of plants. This means we might not have to eat meat, however there is a lot of evidence that we are omnivores. Loads. Maybe large quantities of meat and processed meat is not good for you, however to say that no meat is good for you is just as an insane conclusion. Not enough study, poor article. Redo it completely and do your research this time.

Its true that the human digestive system is not designed to eat meat and flesh

Its good and definitely true

This is definitely true. Humans arents supposed to eat meat, or if they are, the amount is supposed to be very little. Plant based diets also net the most longevity of any other diet. The answers are obvious. And if you think your teeth are designed to eat meat, think again. If you were naturally meant to eat meat then you would be able to tear into the flesh of an animal and kill it with you teeth. That's how nature works. If you were really meant to eat meat, you would be like every other animal out there that eats meat, you would kill an animal with your teeth and claws and then eat its raw flesh, ripping it out with your powerful teeth, jaw, and neck muscles.

Sure humans don't have the piercing sharp teeth that lions do, but we do have sharp canine teeth for MEAT tearing. Humans are omnivores...which means we were made to eat anything and everything we could find. Historically, this meant more veggies than animals (because vegetables don't run away)...but humans absolutely ate meat when they could find it and hunt it down. And you're wrong about the stomach. The stomach produces PEPSINOGEN and HCL. The PEPSINOGEN reacts with the HCL to form PEPSIN. PEPSIN digests meat, eggs, dairy, AND veggies into peptides. Once the partially digested slurry (peptides) leave the stomach, the small intestines absorb all they can. Your essential misunderstanding of how the digestion is done is all I need to know about you to know this "article" is bunk. HCL is simply there to activate the PEPSINOGEN.

Cows have 4 chambers in ther stomach. While we are monogastic like a cat or pig... 1 chamber for rapid digestion. good try though. Like pigs, which are most compatible in humans, we eat what we can find...which was mostly veggies with occasional meat. then we got smarter than pigs and ate them and everything else all the time! we adapted like we are good at. Bigger brains require more protein. Plus alot of cultures drink dairy without proper exercise. 30+ min of good running a day... caveman ran deer down with a stick in hand. takes alot of running to get a deer tired lol yes you can run a deer down look up out running horses. ok im done but a bias artical here... I do like eating a litte veggies with large doses of meat. Some cultures are better with meat than others, native americans and aborigones. i don't ever feel good unless i get that creatine from beef!! then i can run beastmode leaving my dog in the dust...

VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE YOU GET IMPORTANT POINTS ACROSS,EASY FOR ANYONE TO UNDERSTAND IF THEY WANT TO,IM A VEGETARIAN AND WISH PEOPLE WOULD THINK BEFORE THEY EAT. UNFORTUNATELY MOST PEOPLE JUST IGNORE THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE AND ENDLESS STUDIES AND CHOOSE TO MOCK NON MEAT EATERS
HELEN
I found this really interesting. I am vegetarian and lactose intolerant. My mother has osteoperosis so I am really interested in any link there.

Agree with the author. Herbivores? The author didn't at all suggest this. Yes we are not ruminants this is sure. Now can we thrive on nothing but plant based diets? That is the question. Some do better than others ...

Good article! Could have talked about the many more benefits of a Vegetarian diet, not just less bones loss. But all the heatlh benefits. Also, you should have mentioned the scientific evidence since 1928 from Dr. Gerson that clearly shows how removing all animal products from one's diet CURES people from cancer and other life threatening diseases. He advocates a Vegan Diet. I myself have recently become a Vegetarian.

Thinking that humans are strictly herbivores is wishful thinking that is not supported by historical evidence.

I totally agree that all humans are meant to be vegetarians!!
